Have you ever met someone and within a very short time knew the two of you “just clicked?”

Possibly it was the opposite and you did not get along at all.  How do we discover the reason for that quick connection, take conscious control of it and use it to improve our ability to communicate?  Ask yourself, “What is my strategy for quickly establishing a trusted relationship?”

This talk will explore that question and offer some possible answers.  This will be far faster and deeper than the traditional small talk trap that many programs teach.  Observing an object or picture in someone’s office and talking enthusiastically about it can actually backfire on you.

We will explore techniques to use how people communicate to better our own communication, and learn how to get to a trusted relationship with others more quickly.

Patrick Turner, CTO & Principal of Small Footprint

Patrick brings over 15 years of professional software development experience including 8 years in the Medical Device Industry. Over his career he has produced software addressing a broad range of business needs including Sales Force & Marketing Automation, Inventory Tracking, Finance, Human Resources, Clinical Research, Patient Education, Medical Practice Websites, Medical Procedure Coding, and Event Logistics Planning. Along the way he’s proven his unique ability to translate business needs into technical solutions. Patrick relocated to North Carolina in 2007 for his love of the great outdoors the state has to offer. He and his wife Alison (an accomplished pastry chef) have two kids, William & Fiona. Patrick received his MBA from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee.

About our speaker:

Lisa Snedeker was named Director of Communications and Public Relations for the Wake Forest University School of Law in October 2008. Prior to joining the law school, she worked with the Babcock Graduate School of Management’s External Relations department as a public relations/media relations specialist. Before coming to Wake Forest, Lisa worked as a reporter and editor for The Associated Press, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Las Vegas Sun and The Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer, among other newspapers and magazines. She served as the Mass Communications Department Chair at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, for three years and has taught at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas as well as Rockingham (N.C.) Community College and Mohave Community College in Arizona. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, French and broadcasting from Saint Mary-of-the Woods College in Indiana and a master’s degree in Public Affairs Reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

About Jason: 

Jason Thiel is the president of the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, an active member and advocacy organization leading the efforts to revitalize and strengthen downtown Winston-Salem business recruitment and support, economic development, marketing, special events, and implementation of the Downtown Plan.

Jason joined the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership in January of 2006, after serving as the Director of Downtown Development and Tax Increment Financing for Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. Prior to working in Fort Worth, Jason worked for the city of Jacksonville, Florida in several different capacities related to downtown development.

Jason graduated with a BA in Political Science from Temple University in 1994 and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida in 1997.

He enjoys traveling with his wife Shayna, reading books, and spending time with his six year old son Ryan and two year old son David.
